Script differences
The tease in the script is the same as the episode. The first act starts differently.

Peter and the Ancient are in Caine's apothecary. Peter looks lost. He picks up a mixing bowl.

Ancient: "We all miss him very much."
Peter drops the mixing bowl onto the table with such a force that it shatters.
Peter: "I just want to know why? How could he disappear into the night and not return."
Ancient: "Perhaps he has gone to his own secret place."
Peter: "Like to Shambhala. If I thought that I'd ask you to get the Book of Shambhala and take us there. But you would know if he'd gone there."
Ancient: "He has not."

This is when Peter says Caine told him he'd always know where he was. The Ancient then says, "You have to face the possibility, Peter, that your father has resumed a journey only he can make." Then Peter says his line about Caine not leaving without saying goodbye, adding, "And if he was being held somewhere against his will...we'd know that too, wouldn't we?"

Ancient: "If he wanted us to."

Then there is the scene at Delancey's with a few additional people and a few additional lines. Blake asks Peter is he's heard anything, and Peter replies, shaking his head, "I keep going through his enemies in my mind. Bon Bon Hai, a member of the Sing Wah, maybe the Shadow Assassin again..."

TJ: "Shadow Assassin? I'd like to hear about that one.
Jody: (quietly) "No, you wouldn't. Trust me."
Blake: "MO's don't match, Peter."
Strenlich: "Bon Bon Hai would use a shooter. The Sing Wah use their hands for brute force."
Jody: "And a Shadow Assassin uses his thoughts along with a little poison to kill you." (softer) "As my sister Kira found out."
TJ: (touching her arm) "Sorry."
Jody: "That's okay. You didn't know. Gets a little easier every day to live with."
Skalany: (also quiet) "Has it occurred to any of you that I could have been the target of that car?" (to Peter) "Your father threw me out ofit's path a second before it would have to hit me. Try living with that for three months."

Kermit moves up to them and they have the dialog about all the searching he's doing. After mentioning MI5, he says to Peter, "Your father can make himself invisible when he wants to, Peter."

Peter: (flaring) "This doesn't match his emotional MO, okay Blake? And that car rundown was meant for him, not you, so save the mea culpa guilt, Skalany. My father is in trouble and we've got to find him!"
Strenlich: "We're working on it, Peter."

This is when Kermit invites Peter to join him and Simms at the casino. "Play a little blackjack, pull a few slots. I hear the singer's real good."

Peter: "I don't like casinos. Time stops, people become obsessed, gambling's a disease. Bad enough we're having the convention there. I need some air."
He finishes his beer and moves from the bar.

TJ: "He's really hurting, isn't he?
Strenlich: "I don't like seeing Peter like this."
Jody: "None of us do."
Skalany: "So what do we do about our guy?"
Kermit: (softer) "Find his father for him."

At the casino, when Kermit and Simms stare at the interchange between Marsden and Lucy, Simms says, "Don't slip into mercenary mode on me..."

Kermit: "Sometimes it isn't easy."

At the Silver Dollar, when Peter explains to Jordan why he wants to see Jack, he hasn't ordered a drink yet. He's still standing and talking to her. She is grasping his arm. She says, "You're clutching at straws, Peter."

Peter extricates himself from her grasp.
Peter: "You do what you're good at and I'll do what I'm good at." (seeing that they're both being watched by the bouncer) "Bourbon, straight up, twist of lemon. I'll be back."
Monica Sztybel
When Peter accuses Jack of lying, he says, "I'm going to give you five more seconds and then I'm going to crush your windpipe."

Jack: (choking harder) "This is police harassment."
Peter: "No. This is you looking at death. Where is he?"

The scene at the poker table with Caine is not with Peter. Instead they have dialog between Caine and Marsden about how much in debt he is to the casino. This is the part when Caine (Rocky) says he's good for business.

Strenlich is in the lounge with Simms as Caine enters. They watch him walk over to Cindy and kiss her.

Strenlich: "Kermit told us we'd have to see it to believe it."

The rest of the lines are the same with Skalany and Peter's entrance through Kermit's comment about being a voyeur.

When Cindy introduces herself to Peter, he recognizes her as a model he's seen in the jeans ads. He's distracted, telling her she's beautiful. Then goes back to business once she refers to Rocky.

When she surprises Peter with her comment about living together, and she adds, "Works for me. I guess he has a home to go to. But I've never seen it since he moved in. Is that why you're here? You're from that home?"

Peter: "No, I don't live with him."
Cindy: "But a wife does, is that it?"
Peter: "No, he's not married. Not any longer."

When Skalany returns to the bar after talking with Rocky, Strenlich puts his arm around her and says, "Take it easy, detective."

When Peter asks Caine to take a walk with him he says to Cindy, "Say goodnight, honey. I'm taking your fellah for a walk."

When Peter shows his disbelief of the act to Caine, he says, "I'm surprised you're not talking like Stallone."

Rocky says he's from Chicago, not "Jersey".

When Rocky tries to leave Caine's place, Peter tells him there's someone he wants him to meet first. They practically run into the Ancient in the street as they were heading for his place. Lo Si smiles in recognition.

Ancient: "Ah! My dear friend! You have returned to us!"
Caine: "I must really look like this dude. You're...?"
Ancient: "I am called the Ancient."
Caine: "I can see why. Look, I'm sorry if you've lost someone close to both of you. They say everyone in the world has a double somewhere." (extending his hand) "Good to meet you... the `Ancient', was it?"
Ancient: (softly) "You can see why." (gripping Caine's hands; as they tremble) "Yes. Yes, I understand."
Caine: You understand what?"
Ancient: "Our mistake."
The Ancient turns and moves off into the darkness. Awkward beat between Caine and Peter.

Apparently Caine hasn't lit a cigarette in front of Peter yet, because when he does, Peter says, taken aback, "You don't smoke."

When Caine tells Peter to stay out of his life, they hear a fight in the alley. It's the Ancient who is attacked. The bottle was raised over his head.

After the scene with Skalany and TJ in the squadroom talking about Caine's piano playing, there's a scene with Peter and Jordan at his apartment. Peter is pacing the living room. Jordan sits curled up on the sofa.

Peter: "I gave him a dozen opportunities to tell me what the hell is going on. And he didn't take them."
Jordan: (gently) "Maybe he can't. You've got to face the possibility that this isn't your father."
Peter: "It's him. Hair's different, speech patterns, clothes, attitudes, he's smoking, drinking, he's got some young babe he's living with. But I can feel his presence. Because I'm a part of him, Jordie. We're connected spiritually. Emotionally.
Jordan: "Amnesia may be a small price to pay. He could still be in a coma from that car hit."

Peter goes into a flashback at that point. Master Kahn is being carriedin, bloodied. The monks lay him on a pallet. Young Peter is frightened by the sight. Caine takes Kahn's hand.

Caine: "What happened?"
Young Peter: "He got into a fight in town with Vance Cavenaugh's men."
Ping Hi: "Trying to protect me."
Kahn looks up, delirious. Tries to speak.
Caine: "Do not talk, Master Kahn. Take these."
Caine puts some herbs under Kahn's tongue.
Kahn: "I don't know you."
Ping Hi: "Any of us."
Kahn: "You called me Kahn. Not my name. It's... don't know. Who am I?"
He passes out. Caine rises.
Caine: "Take him to his quarters and care for him. I will be there directly."

The monks carry Kahn off. Old Ping Hi shakes his head.
Peter: "What's happened, father?"
Caine: "It is called amnesia, my son. If brought on by severe trauma, the brain may shut down all recognition. Of pain. Of identity."
Peter: "What can we do?"
Caine: "Attempt to reach him through the strength of his chi. Through meditation."
Ping Hi: "Master Kahn may never again know who he is or who is friends are."

Caine isn't thrilled with the statement. They hold on Peter's fearful face and return to the present.

Jordan: "Did Master Kahn's memory return?"
Peter: "Yes. But there was a year where he recognized no one at all. Not even his face in the mirror." (tears in his eyes) "I don't know what to do, Jordan. I feel like I've lost my father for a second time. And this time there's not going to be a reunion."
Jordan rises and takes him into her arms, holding him tightly.

Before the scene where Simms calls Peter into her office, there's a bit of interchange between Skalany and TJ who are heading out to the convention.

Skalany: "Not sure I can do this. I don't want to run into him. Knowing he doesn't recognize me. If it's Caine."
TJ: "We may be getting some new feedback on our mystery man. I'll explain on the way."

Then Simms comes out of her office to catch up with Peter.

Simms: "Detective Caine..." (as he turns) "Doesn't look like you've slept all night."
Peter: "That's because I haven't.

Rather than take him into her office, she brings him to the Ancient's place where he meets with Kahn in the Ancient's presence.

It's the Ancient who says that Caine gambled a great deal during the time the Dalai Lama tried to convince him to join the temple.

Peter: "How do you know that?" (the Ancient shrugs enigmatically) "Why don't I know that?"
Simms: "Weren't you two years old at the time and still recovering from the grief of your mother's death?"

They go from there.

At the conference, TJ, his dad, and Simms are on stage prepping for the speeches.

TJ: "Here's your speech, Dad. I've kept it humble, but sincere with that embarrassing hazing at the Police Academy omitted."
Kincaid: (wryly to Simms) "At least he now lives at your precinct house instead of my Bellwood house. Got your speech ready, Captain?"
Something beyond the camera has caught Simms' eye. (It turns out to be Jack Wong)
Simms: (distracted) "Ladies and gentlemen, I feel privileged that of the twenty precincts represented here today, I ma the Captain chosen to introduce a man with the toughest police job in the State."
Kincaid: "I like it."
Monica Sztybel
Later on they do the scene where he pitches his speech and TJ says it would sound better amplified and done like Seinfeld.

Everyone is entering the ballroom, save for Peter and Kermit.

Peter: "Shouldn't we go in there?"
Kermit: "It's expected."
Peter: "Score some points with the Commissioner."
Kermit: "Couldn't hurt."
Peter: "Feel like taking a stroll around the casino instead?"
Kermit: "And make sure no one's robbing it? Why not?"
Monica Sztybel
When Jody and Skalany do the scene where they're stretching their legs, instead of Peter telling Skalany and Jody that "you never know who might rob the casino", he says, "Let's find my father."
Monica Sztybel
A few scenes after Kelly pushed Jordan down for cover, Jordan says, "I owe you."

Kelly: "We'll do lunch."
Monica Sztybel
When Peter and Caine embrace after the fighting is over, Kermit watches, removing his glasses and saying, "Oh, yeah."
Monica Sztybel
Jody is at the table with the others in the tag.

Strenlich and Blake are also in the lounge. As Caine and Peter walk out, Strenlich says, "Good to have you back, Caine."

Blake: "Likewise."

After Lucy thanks Caine for helping her and walks off, Peter says, "The Ancient knew the truth, didn't he. When he took your hands last night at the cafe?"

Caine: "He saw the same images."
Peter: "That's what he meant by `I understand. Our mistake.'"

When Caine says the car was an unknowing catalyst for his amnesia, Peter says, "It had to be amnesia, because you knew I'd never accept you as someone else."

Caine: "I knew that."

When they embrace, there are tears in Caine's eyes.
