| The scenes in the barn
between Peter and Sam were supposed to be longer, but
Chris Potter was having problems with hay fever. So they
shot what they could. |

| Script differences | |
| Tease is different. It
takes place at the precinct. Strenlich: "No word from your father?" Peter: "Zip. Zero. Nada. The Ancient's heard nothing. I've been to his place four times. He's not there. He wants to get to know his son better. Ignoring him isn't a step in the right direction. Then Strenlich and Peter launch into the dialog, which ended up being used in Tournament about the tiger's tail. Janice Morgan enters wearing leather. She tells Peter that his father came by earlier and he left a message about leaving town. Peter is stunned. She shrugs and says that Caine said to tell him goodbye. |
Monica Sztybel |
| The scene goes to where
we saw the tease begin, however, Peter's first line is
different. Peter: "If you're going to walk out of my life again, shouldn't the 'so long, Peter, take it easy, dodge those bullets' have been said in person?" Caine: "Only if I did not intend to return." Peter: "Do you mind my asking where you're going? I know it's probably none of my business, but...." Caine: "Every breath I take is your business...." And Caine goes on to tell him about stepping back into the past. |
Monica Sztybel |
| When they arrive at near
the temple, Peter puts a hand on Caine's arm. Peter: "I'm not sure this is such a good idea. I didn't think so before we left and now we're here I know it's not." Caine: "We have no choice." |
Monica Sztybel |
| Once in front of the
building, Caine has a montage flashback of the happy and
traumatic moments until the destruction. He comes out of
it with tears streaming down his face. Peter has a montage flashback too. In it they show the scene where Peter cries out to Caine for help and Caine turns away. In the present, tears form in his eyes. He follows Caine through the courtyard. The scene goes on from there starting with Peter telling Caine that Caine taught him a lot in that place, etc. |
Monica Sztybel |
| At Laura's grave, Peter
says something before the flashback. Peter: (conversationally) "You always said she looked like Rhonda Fleming, but looking at her picture in this locket, I'd say she was more like Geena Davis." |
Monica Sztybel |
| FYI, the speech Peter
says about "patience" and "tolerance"
after he kicks the guys' butts in the street is the exact
one young Peter said in the tease for Rain's Only Friend.
I love Caine's smile when he repeats his line:-) In fact,
in the script, Peter says, "Isn't that what you told
me fifteen years ago?" Caine: "Verbatum." |
Monica Sztybel |
| The scenes at the
Lowry's house start with Peter and Caine arriving
together, not like in the episode. Caine follows Rachel
into the kitchen, and Sam asks Peter... Sam: "So you're a priest?" Peter: "A cop." Sam: "Wow! Do you carry a gun? Can I see it?" Peter: "I don't carry it all the time." Sam: "How good a shot are you? My dad taught me. He was the best." Peter: "I'm pretty good." Sam: "We used to go hunting and fishing all the time. Come with me. I got something to show ya." The next scene is the one between Caine and Rachel in the kitchen. |
Monica Sztybel |
| In the barn, Sam pulls
out the gun. Sam: "It was my dad's prized possession. Says it once belonged to Wyatt Earp. I've been practicing with it. Come on, I'll show ya." Camera turns to show a wooden sawhorse. Sam sets up a half-a-dozen Coors cans he gets out of a big cookie tin. Peter: "Your mother know you keep this in here? Sam: "She know Dad gave it to me. She doesn't know I've got bullets. You won't tell her will you?" Peter: "Not if you're only going to shoot beer cans." Sam: "I need practice until I'm a good enough shot. You're a cop. You know what I'm saying." This is when Peter goes into his speech about guns and just after he says, "Cops use guns to stay alive," he adds: "The Chief of Detectives at my precinct is a tough ex-Marine named Strenlich. Two tours of Vietnam, L.R.P. You know what that is?" Sam: (spellbound) "No." Peter: "Long Range Patrol guy. He went in before the company to pick off snipers in the trees. He's been in the police force twenty years and you know what accomplishment he's proudest of? Not the four citations for bravery. The fact that he's never had to draw his gun in the line of duty and fire it." Sam: "Not even once?" Peter: "Not even once. So you put your thoughts of going after this guy Cavanaugh with this gun out of your head. Or I may have to come back here and arrest you." Sam: (wide-eyed) "You'd do that?" Peter: "You bet..." Then Peter says Sam should hang tough for his mother. Then asks Sam to demonstrate his shooting skills. Sam misses the first shot. Peter adjusts his range and Sam fires again. This time it hits. Peter tells him he's pretty good. Then... DESCRIPTION: "Sam hands Peter the old gun. Peter fires and misses. Sam looks crestfallen. Peter turns his back on the beer cans." Peter: "Bad guys try to get behind you in drug busts. Okay if I move? Like the Sundance Kid..." (whirls, fires, blows all the rest of the cans off the sawhorse) "I'm better when I move." Sam: "Wow!" Peter: "Where do you get the ammo?" Sam: "Old man Harding gives me a box every month. He says we have to arm ourselves against the wolves at night." Peter: (more to himself) "The two-legged kind." Then Rachel calls them for dinner. Peter says, "Give me the bullets. All of them." (reluctantly, Sam hands over the bullets) "No more target practice for a while." |
Monica Sztybel |
| At dinner they repeat
yet another dialog. This time from Force of Habit:-) Peter: "Is this what we ate at the temple?" Caine: "Yes." Peter: "Did I like it then?" Caine: "No." Rachel: "I could probably rustle up a few hamburgers." Peter looks hopefully at Caine, but his expression quells the sudden enthusiasm. Peter: "This will be great." |
Monica Sztybel |
| In the script, rather
than say the temple was destroyed by Tan, Peter says
"by mercenaries". |
Monica Sztybel |
| When Sam asks about
Vance storming the temple, Caine says "yes"
before Rachel tells Sam not to discuss Vance. |
Monica Sztybel |
| The dialog between Peter
and Sam in the barn about the locket is shorter. Sam
tells him the story and Peter asks the name of who took
the locket. Sam tells him and Peter leaves, saying,
"I'll get your locket." As runs to his car, Caine moves fast out of the house. Caine: (with urgency) "Peter, wait!" Peter "flips a 180 and takes off." |
Monica Sztybel |
| The fight scene as Peter
putting up a good fight against Vance before being
overpowered. Peter is the one who makes the first move on
Vance. DESCRIPTION: "Peter lunges at Vance. the big man moves with a surprising grace and agility. He avoids Peter's blow, gets in a couple of sharp punches and brings Peter to his knees. Then he kicks him back. They're ringed by people, but no one moves. Peter scrambles to his feet. He has two kung fu kicks blocked and then Vance rocks him with a shot to the face. Peter goes down spitting blood. "Peter comes back for more. He gets in a couple of good hits, but the stronger man simply overpowers him. He grabs Peter in a bear hug until Peter gasps for air. Then Vance releases him, hits him three more times, the last shot sending Peter into the bar. He crumples down and tries to get up again, but stumbles and falls. Vance looks barely winded. When they dump Peter at Rachel's house, Caine runs to him and scoops him into his arms. When Caine says they'll deal with Vance after the repairs, Peter asks, "Repairs? Repairs to what?" Caine: "We are rebuilding this house." Peter: "Take a good look at me, Pop. I just had the stuffing kicked out of me. I'm too weak to hammer." Caine: (wryly) "Then you may hold the nails." |
Monica Sztybel |
| During the scene where
Caine and Peter work on the house, Peter does a time out
sign, still weak from the beating. He sees a hole in the
wall and has a flashback to the "betrayal"
scene. Then shakes it off. That is when Caine comes up to
him and asks him if he is troubled. Caine: "You are troubled. Not by these events." Peter: "No. By something that happened in the temple. When Tan's mercenaries attacked. I guess I've been living with it for fifteen years. But it didn't come to the surface until we returned here." When Caine tries to explain, Peter fills in the blanks... Caine: "There was an explosion, I..." Peter: (cutting him off) "Turned toward it. A fraction of a second. Out of my sight. Then you were hurt. The next thing you remembered..." Caine: "Old Ping Hi thrusting me through a doorway." Peter then says the line about nightmares of betrayal, etc. |
Monica Sztybel |
| When Caine doesn't fight
the three goons outside the hardware store, Sam is
disappointed. He says Caine is afraid to fight, just like
his father was. He then runs away, just after Rachel
reprimands him for saying something bad about his father.
Caine tells her Sam's pain is deep and he's transplanted
it to Vance. Rachel doesn't know what to do. Caine says
he will do something about it. |
Monica Sztybel |
| Peter comes to just
after the above scene. Blood is caked down one side of
his head. He tries to focus. He thinks he sees Ping Hi
"moving down a translucent corridor past the ruined
walls and columns. Hazy, unreal, part of Peter's
delirium." Peter reaches out, gasping. Peter: (calling) "Ping Hi! Help me! Help me!" "The surrealistic figure disintigrates..." Peter "gets to his feet, staggers a couple of steps and then collapses unconscious." |
Monica Sztybel |
| The dialog between Vance
and one of the bullies, Starrett, is harsher. Starrett
doesn't want anything to do with him. He's firmer here
than in the episode. Vance fires him and threatens his
life if he goes to the sheriff. |
Monica Sztybel |
| A bar scene follows.
Vance approaches Crockett (the one who holds the rifle in
the scene at the temple where Caine fights Vance). He
offers him 1 grand to do a nights work, just to watch his
back. |
Monica Sztybel |
| In the scene at the
temple, we don't see Peter regain consciousness again,
but he does take out Crockett. This time it involves
several kicks to get the job done. "A foot swings
into frame and kicks the rifle from Crockett's hands.
Camera swings around to take in Peter, still groggy,
dried blook on one side of his face, breathing shallowly.
Crocket lunges at him. Peter takes the bigger man out
with a series of kicks. He picks up the fallen
rifle." There is a description of Sam being impressed with Peter's shooting, when he shoots the knife out of Vance's hand. Peter seems recovered by the end of that scene. |
Monica Sztybel |
| In the tag, after Peter
and Caine leave Rachel's house, Caine stands at the
temple and has a flashback. This is the one they used in
Enter the Tiger when Caine is leaving the temple. Peter also has the flashback from that episode here. Then they go back to the present with Peter and Caine saying their lines and embracing. |
