Aspects of the Soul

Trivia Contributor
If any of you have read the KFTLC Fan Club Newsletter when Valerie and Lenore went to see the post production of this episode, then I'm sure you'll recall the funny moments.

For those of you who don't know, post production is when they edit the show together, and add the sound effects (anything from footsteps to an explosion), music and dubbed over (looped) dialog.

Valerie and Lenore were at the studio while the sound engineers (Foley artists) did the sound effects for Aspects of the Soul. At one point the foley artists got incredibly silly. In the shot where Peter has emerged from the hallway with Caine's chi inside of him, they added a funny little effect just before Peter bursts through the door. It's the sound of a toilet flushing:-) Now, everytime I watch that scene, I'm reminded of that and I laugh.

One other goofy sound effects moment was at the ending of the show. When they have Richard Anderson saying, "Kung Fu: The Legend Continues is Produced by Warner Brothers Distributing Canada Limited..." they changed it to David breathing heavily and saying, "Was it good for you?" Of course, they took that out:-)

Script differences:
The tease in the script I have shows Caine standing on his balcony reacting to the death as it happens, as if the man's cries carry through the city. Then they cut to the precinct, where Peter is at his desk. "He looks up from his work and glances at the phone just BEFORE it rings. In so many ways he's becoming more like his father. Peter's got a strong foreboding as he picks up the phone."

Then they go to the scene in Blaisdell's office with Strenlich, Blake, Chin and Morgan.

Just before Peter and Chin leave the office, when Strenlich gets the call about the dead body found in a car. The script has him say "Morgan", while in the episode he sounds like he's saying "Kermit". The silly part is that the person giving him the information is named Morgan - and that's also the name of Janice Morgan.

At the mall, when Chin says, "You sound just like my grandfather." Peter not only replies, "Mine too," but adds, "Could be we're related...whatdaya think?"

I can't tell, but it seems the script has Peter and Chin testing their friendship, since they're both new. Peter turns his attention back to the crime scene.
He adds: "The killers used automatic weapons. A very loud... very public message."
Chin: "That's not the way it's done... not in Chinatown."
Peter: "Oh, right. As if you'd know all about that?"
Chin: "Ease off me, hot shot. Be mad at the media. Not your partner."
Peter: "Yeah. I'll work on my attitude."
Chin: (a big grin) "That'd be great."

Then Peter is about to speak when the mother's scream interrupts him.

When Peter, Strenlich and Chin are watching Caine and Clarence in the interrogation room, and Peter says, "Besides, if he means to harm my father I want to be here." Strenlich says wryly, "Like your father needs your protection."
Chin: (surprised) "Your father?"

When Peter leaves the interrogation area to take over the assignment of
escorting Clarence, Chin says, "That guy's a pistol!"

Yuen Yee is surprised to see Caine enter her home. He asks her for a reading.
Yuen Yee: (a soft chuckle) "Do you fear the future, Shaolin... or is your past gaining?"
Caine: (smiles) "My past has already moved beyond me. For the rest...let the cards answer."

As Peter is escorting Clarence out of the courthouse, these first couple of lines were not used:
Clarence: "Air in the outside even tastes different. Cleaner - like it hasn't already passed through a dozen stinking bodies."
Peter: "Move it, Convict. You can breath on your own time..."

Then it continues with Peter saying that the judge cleared him for thre funeral.

After Peter hurts his hand, hitting Clarence, they continue to fight. Clarence gets some lethal punches, but Peter is not driven off his feet. Then Clarence stops and Peter says, "Lets get on with our business... I don't want you outside any longer than necessary."

Later on Clarence explains why they go to the restaurant:
Clarence: "Come on. They've got the best Moo Goo Guy Pan in the world."
Peter: "Food's not part of the deal."
Clarence: "My family's in here. It's part of how they want to celebrate Uncle Jimmy's death."
Peter hesitates - caution. Doesn't like this change.
Clarence: "You don't have to approve, Cop. The judge said I could attend services... this is part of the deal."
Monica Sztybel
After Peter loses Clarence and returns to the precinct, they describe his running into Morgan as, "He almost bumps right into Detective Janice Morgan, dressed in low-cut leather. He steadies himself with his hands (dangerously) on her chest." Peter: (to Janice) "Sorry."
Janice: "Didn't mean to be in the way. Those hands look like they're shaking."

I'm glad they didn't use this in the episode:-) They came close, though. The difference is that Peter isn't touching her breasts.

Peter tells Strenlich that he believes Clarence will call when he's ready to go back to prison.

When Peter goes to Caine for assistance, there's a preliminary scene where Peter is alone in his father's place, calling out for him. He approaches the alter where the Buddha sits and has a flashback. Young Peter stands in front of another Buddha with a monk named Jo Chow.

Jo Chow: "All things learned are never forgotten."
Peter: "Is that why we meditate - to clear the mind."
Jo Chow: "...and allow our thoughts to find the proper path."

The flashback ends. Peter glances over at a nearby spear. He picks it up and goes into another flashback. This time it's the one about the Iron Shirt. It's not the full scene, saving a lesson Caine teaches young Peter until the discussion with Caine in the present about transfering chi. At the end of the flashback young Peter notices something to his left and turns. He's then back in the present, sensing Caine at his left, he jumps and turns to see both Caine and the Ancient.

Peter: "I wish you wouldn't do that."
The Ancient: (wryly) "He does it to me also."
Peter: (to Caine) "I need your help."

When Peter explains what Clarence intends to do and that he'd like to stop it, the Ancient says, "You wish to demonstrate your authority."
Peter: "Yes."
Ancient: "It is a Tong leader who personally commands the greatest fear and respect.
Peter: "That's why I wanted to make it personal. I wanted to take Clarence down in public -- on his own terms -- his game. One on one."

And the scene continues from there.

When they go back to the flashback about the Iron shirt, it ends a little different:

Peter: "This priest can't be hurt. It's like he wears a coat of armor."
Caine: "Yes."
Peter: "Then this is the ultimate discipline and can't be defeated."
Caine: "The technique requires great concentration. To win, you do not attack the technique, you interefere with his concentration."
Peter: "How do I do that?"
Caine: "Your Chi - your will - must be stronger."

They return to the present where Peter says, "I did not think you would interfere in the business ofthe Tongs."
Caine: "Because I'm Shaolin? That has always been our way. For hundreds of years, since the first of us were forced to leave China, we have been outsiders. In every country, the Chinese have lived outside the system... outside the law. Denied its protection."
Peter: "Yes, but..."
Ancient: "The Tongs became our government. They would mediate disputes, provide protection. Help us survive in strange and hostile lands."
Caine: "Over the centuries they have become part of the fabric of our culture. During those times to remove that strand and the cloth would have disintegrated."
Ancient: "That was then, not now."
Caine: (he strokes a plant) "They are like weeds in a garden. They grow larger and stronger as everything around them withers and dies."
Peter: "That's great, Pop. But how are you guys going to help me beat Clarence?"

That's when Caine brings up Fajing. When Peter gives the definition in the script, rather than Caine correcting him he says, "It can do that... or it can reduce the power of your opponent's chi."

When Caine gives Peter the amulet, what is said is different:

Caine: "What is needed to defeat Iron Shirt, takes years to learn. And more to master.
Peter: "I don't have years. By this time tomorrow, Clarence will be the leader of the Zhoa Tong."
Caine: (putting the amulet around Peter's neck) "Someone will fill that chair, but it must not be Clarence. We must take a greater risk. Come with me."

Chris Potter said once that David had trouble remembering the lines from this next scene. He kept telling Peter to concentrate on the candle. When Peter joked, "If I lose focus, I die?" David just kept repeating the line:-)

In the script, after Caine explains the Shen Kung transference, he elaborates:
Caine: "The candle is a lens. It directs my Shen Kung. To accept it, you must be at a heightened sense of physical awareness."
Peter: "How do we acheive that?"
Caine: "Fear."
Peter: "Wait. If I take your chi, or your shen kung, what will that do to you?"
Caine: "I will be in a very weakened state. This will be a temporary gift."
Peter: "There's more at risk here than you're saying."
Caine: "All things have risk. Focus on the candle..."

And then Caine tell's Peter to wait before following him into the room (like in the epiusode).
Peter: "How long do I wait."
Caine: "Until you are ready."
Peter: "When will I know when I'm ready?"
Caine: "How do I know?"
Monica Sztybel
Once Peter approaches the candle the script says, "The light from the candle slowly increases - it grows quickly into a blinding flash. Peter is suddenly thrown backwards. Blinded by the light. He has lost focus with the candle. Peter reaches out - screams for his father and we fade out."
Monica Sztybel
In the next scene (no toilet flushing ;-)) where Peter runs out and calls for his father, they description reads: "Peter wakes with an incredible sense of well being. A heightened awareness, greater physical strength, yet with an inner calm which he has never known. He looks around." He calls for Caine then adds, "You said not to look for you, so I won't."

Peter goes to the precinct. Janice is there and she senses his heightened sexual promise. Strenlich tells him Clarence called and where he is. Janice asks Peter if he needs back-up. He says no. She says, "Too bad." After Peter leaves, Frank asks her, "What's happened to him?" She replies, "I don't know, but I'd sure like to find out."

At the mall, after Peter quips about "Cell Block C and the Dating Game", there's more to the scene:
Monica Sztybel
Clarence: (sotto, serious and intense) "There have always been private 'agreements' between the authorities and the Tongs. Chinatown's a separate place. The western world is just a visitor. That's how it is... that's how it's always been..."
Peter: "Then it's got to change. The rules here are the same as they are anywhere else. It's time the people got out from under the heel of the Tongs."

That's when Clarence says he can stop the Tong war and the killing. When Peter says, "The end justifies the means", Clarence says, "Almost every time."
Peter: "My father says life is the process - the goal is illusion - the process is purpose."
Clarence: "No offense, but your father is of another world - you and I are practical men. We live in a pragmatic world - not what should be, but what is."
Peter: "I love these philosophical discussions. We'll have to do it again, real soon. I'll arrange to drive up to the state pen on my day off... we'll drink tea and chat. Let's go."

That's when Clarence says there's nothing Peter can do to stop him.
Monica Sztybel
The speech Peter gives in Chinese is a little different. It doesn't have the Chinese, but the English translation is there. It goes - first in English: "As many of you know I am a police officer." (in Chinese) "With the blood of China in my veins." (then in English) "This man is my prisoner..."
Monica Sztybel
When they're fighting, Clarence does see the candle between Peter's eyes. I wondered if he saw Caine. While the episode led me to believe that it's the combined strength of Caine and Peter that defeats Clarence, the script leans more toward Peter using his third eye to get inside Clarence's third eye, and weakening his chi in order for Peter to defeat him. It wasn't clear in the episode. In the script, Clarence doesn't have a chance to do the Iron Shirt. He sees the candle and is weakened. Peter then delivers the blows.
Clarence: "You didn't do that yourself." (off Peter's silence) "Youweren't alone. Your father was there with you. I felt his power... his energy."
Peter: "You're right. And any time you think about going against me, remember it. Let's go, convict."
