Alex Carter (Ralston) was also in Only The Strong survive
as Canyon Parks. |

| Linda Thorson (Geena
Sinclair) was also in Laurie's Friend |
|
| Peter's speech,
"look for my reflection", was written by Chris
Potter at the last minute before the shooting of that
scene. It is not in any script. He felt the scene needed
something more, and he wrote that bit, showed it to
Michael Sloan a few minutes before going in front of the
camera, and Sloan okayed it. |
|
| Chris said they used up
5 boxes of tissues filming the goodbye scene at the
precinct. |
|
| Jon, the cop that Peter
says goodbye to at the precinct, is director Jon Cassar. |
|
| Script differences | |
| The script starts out at
Geena Sinclair's house. She's on the phone, calling
Peter. He picks it up at his desk in the precinct. She
tells him "he" is in the house. Peter informs
her to "stand beside the window where you can see
the front door. I'll be there in two minutes." Peter hangs up and rushes through the squadroom. "Two-blue-and-whites,"he says to Blake. "Geena Sinclair's house." Skalany: "I'll go with you, partner." (Peter's gone) "Of course! First rule of hotshot cops. Only rush into desperate situations alone." (calling after him) "At least take T.J.!" (looking around) "Where _is_ T.J.?" Blake: (dialing his phone) "Rushed out of here twenty minutes ago. Something about the supernatural getting in touch with..." Skalany: "Don't tell me. The `dark forces'... My mother's right. I'm surrounded by crazy cops." |
|
| Then comes the scene in
the art gallery. When Kermit asks T.J., "Why bring
Caine," T.J. says, "He's late", and moves
off to look for him. Kawena Beckett approaches Kermit and
says wryly, "I only sleep in a coffin on the
weekends. And blood never tastes as good as cabernet.
They call you Kermit." Kermit: "Did the glasses give me away?" Kawena: "I know who you are." Kermit: "Of course you do. That's how you helped the Chicago police department all those years. `Seeing things'. Knowing things. Finding victims by fondling their ripped clothes. Trapping serial killers by sleeping with their picture under your pillow. Kawena: (ironic) "Sometimes by sleeping with the killers themselves." (looking at Kermit) "I always know when I'm in the presence of one." (looking away) "You're Caine's friend. He's just arrived. I can feel it. His chi is overwhelming." The Ancient arrives with Caine. He moves up to them, as Caine looks at the exhibits. Ancient: (to Kawena) "You can feel it because you are a sorceress." Kawena: "Provocative word. I'm a gallery owner who likes to dabble in the occult." Ancient: "I am Ancient. We have known each other for a very long time." Kawena: (amused) "You're Merlin? Perhaps I'm Morgana." Ancient: "Perhaps." Kawena: (indicating Caine) "I hope your friend finds what he's looking for." Kawena moves away to greet more patrons. Kermit: "Why did I know that you'd be here?" (the Ancient shrugs) "Want to tell me what's going on?" Ancient: (innocently) "How should I know?" Kermit: (wryly) "Because she's right. You've been alive for probably nine hundred years. What's Caine doing here?" Ancient: (softer) "Fulfilling his destiny. What he sees in this place will change his life forever." Kermit: "What am I doing here?" Ancient: "You are the Geser of Ling." Kermit: "Tibetan folklore. So I'm Caine's protector?" Ancient: "No." (softer) "Peter's." |
|
| They cut to Geena's
house with police cars outside of it. Peter tells her
they found no one, but he's ordered the men to search the
house once more. She insists he was there and that she
saw his face. Peter tells her they picked up a suspect
and that she can come to the precinct tomorrow to pick
him out of a lineup. Peter: "You'll be all right, Geena." (softer) "I'm your protector." |
|
| They go back to the
gallery for the dialog between Caine and T.J., and
between Caine and Kermit. Caine makes the request for
Kermit to protect Peter. The dialog is the same. |
|
| Peter has his nightmare.
He sits "bolt upright in bed, awash in perspiration,
gasping. Beside him, Jordan stirs and sits up, taking his
hand", reassuring him it was just a dream. He tells
her it's the "same one" and describes it -
seeing his mother in a Paris cafe, the temple then Jordan
in the cobweb. She asks, "Am I naked." (mirrors
the line Kelly asked him in Return of the Shadow Assassin
- I'm glad they cut this out here). Peter ignores the
question, saying, "And my father is trying to kill me." He gets out of bed. Jordan asks where he's going. He says, "To find out what the hell is going on inside my head. Go back to sleep." He kisses her on the top of her head and exits. |
|
| When Peter enters Caine
place in a rush, he says to him, "Sometimes I feel
like Kramer. On Seinfeld, you know? Always bursting in on
you to tell you some momentous happening, which, by the
time I get here, doesn't seem so important." Caine: "I cannot help you." Peter: "How do you know? You don't know why I'm here." Caine: "You have nightmares you cannot understand. But there are times, like tonight, when our paths must go in different directions." Peter: "Why does this feel more of a nightmare than the one I just experienced?" Caine: "You must leave now, my son. Do not attempt to contact me for thirty-six hours." Peter: "Why? Dammit, Pop, why can't you confide in me?" Caine: (suddenly loud) "Because this is personal!..." This is when Caine goes on about not sharing secrets and facing the darkness. Peter exits. There's no speech about his conflict between Shaolin and cop. |
|
| Now, there's a whole
other plot in this script involving Simms' son Todd. At
the precinct the following morning, as Peter escorts
Geena to the lineup, Clancey (the character from Special
Forces, portrayed by Marina Anderson) walks up to Kelly
Blake. She asks for Captain Simms. |
|
| The next scene is at the
Ancient's apartment. Cheryl is edgy, nervous about Caine,
because he's shut her out and he's never done that
before. The Ancient cautions her to leave him alone,
explaining that Caine must meet the greatest challenge of
his life and cannot be disturbed. Cheryl gets jealous.
"He'd make time for his son. For you." (rising)
"So he's going to make time for me!" Ancient: "Cheryl, no! You do not understand!" She's gone. |
|
| Back in Simms' office,
Clancey tells her that Todd dropped out of the military
academy for days ago. He's searching for his girlfriend
who is in a lot of trouble. "And so is Todd." Simms: "What kind of trouble?" Clancey: "The girl may have been kidnapped." She tells Simms that Todd called her last night from the Shot Glass Bar. Simms grabs her coat and they leave her office. They move past Skalany, Kelly and Blake, who notice them rush off. This is when Skalany asks how the line-up is going. She comments about the fear in Geena's eyes. Kelly tells her that she was stalked once, and that Geena has a right to be afraid. Skalany is not on the phone with her mother. They go to the lineup. A little more dialog, but no major differences |
|
| At Caine's, when he
separates, Cheryl distracts the good one. The evil one
throws him against the wall, then throws Cheryl to one
side and exits. When the good Caine comes around, Cheryl asks him what's going on. He orders her to leave. |
|
| In the Shot Glass Bar,
Jordan is still working there. Simms sees her and says
that she thought Jordan had been removed from her
assignment. Jordan explains that Strenlich reassigned
her. Clancey asks her where Todd is. Jordan says he's
been drinking for three hours. Jordan: "Who is he?" Simms: "My son." Simms and Clancey approach Todd, who isn't happy to see Simms. He says he wrote her the letter so she wouldn't worry. She asks him why he dropped out of the academy, and he says the mortality rate was too high. She doesn't believe him. She asks him to tell her about Amanda. He throws a dirty look at Clancey. |
|
| The next scene is Caine
playing pool with Jack. When Caine thrusts him into the
wall, Jordan sees him and stops dead in shock. Another
waitress stand with her. Jordan: "Caine!" Sally: "You know that old dude?" Jordan: (still soft) "I thought I did." Sally: "Want me to get Richie from behind the bar?" Jordan: "That `old dude' would mop up the room with him. There won't be trouble. Don't worry." They go back to Caine telling Jack his deal. Caine moves off and they go back to Simms and Todd. Todd tells her that Amanda has been kidnapped by an old boyfriend, who happens to be Jack Wong. Simms offers to help, and he says to stay out of it. He leaves. Simms tries to catch up with him, but she loses him in the crowd. |
|
| The next few scenes are
exactly like the episode, save for an added line here and
there. |
|
| Once Peter leaves Simms'
office after his debate with the Commissioner, Simms
says, "If he can prove a case against Detective
Ralston I'm not going to stop him." Kincaid: (exiting) "Yes, you will, Captain. If you wish to remain a Captain in this precinct." |
|
| Peter's reaction to the
Ancient's explanation of Kuan La is better in the script. Peter: "You're talking about two Caines? One benevolent, the other malevolent?" Cheryl: "At war with each other." Peter does ask if he means physically separate. Cheryl blames herself for what happened. When Peter leaves, he says he's going to find his father. Cheryl asks, "Will he find him?" Ancient: "He will return here first." Cheryl: "How do you know that?" Ancient: "It is his destiny." |
|
| When Peter leaves Kermit
in the alley after the fight, he doesn't say he has to
find his father. As he drives off, Kermit says, "A
promise to your father is a promise to keep." |
|
| The next scene takes
place at house where Todd's girlfriend, Amanda Carlson,
is held hostage by some goon named Sheen. He mocks her
and says that Todd will never find her. She thinks
otherwise. Sheen tells her that once they rob the bank
tomorrow they will be on their way to a new life and that
they will be a couple again. She spits in his face. He's
about to slap her when Jack Wong enters. Wong: "If you're going to hit her, then kill her. Otherwise treat her nice. You should never have brought her here in the first place. We've got work to do." (Sheen hesitates; staring down at Amanda) "Or do I call Bon Bon Hai and tell him you're too distracted to plan a robbery?" (Sheen exits; to Amanda) "Best I can do." Wong leaves her alone. She cries softly. |
|
| Next scene: Simms is in
her office finishing up a phone conversation with General
Bradford when T.J. walks in offering to help her find
Todd. She asks him how he knows about it, and he says
that Detective Chin has heard word on the street. T.J.
has a plan that he thinks might be crazy, but might work. |
|
| Back to the house: Todd
enters through the back door. |
|
| Meanwhile, T.J. and
Simms enter a Chinatown building. Simms: "I thought Yuen Yee read the Tarot cards in Chinatown." Kawena's voice: "Not any longer." She is standing in the shadows before a card table. T.J. introduces himself as Thomas Jefferson. Kawena finishes with "Don't call you T.J.." She asks for an article of Todd's clothing. Simms hands her Todd's hat which he left behind at the Shot Glass Bar. Kawena asks them to sit down. She sees images of Todd breaking into the house, and a gun butt smashing down against his head. She tells them where Todd and Amanda are, and offers to draw the house for them. |
|
| The next scene is Caine
destroying the apothecary and hurling Peter across the
room. |
|
Then they go to the scene at
Geena's house where Ralston attacks.
Instead of just the TV going out, all the lights go out as well.
When Ralston says, "Always carry an ankle gun. Being the
good cop that I
am," Peter says, "You're a good cop? You don't know the
meaning of the
word."
Kermit's voice: (out of the darkness) "My sentiments
exactly."
Description: "A light is snapped on. Kermit sits in an easy
chair. A
wild-eyed Ralston swings on him with the gun. Kermit throws up
his
elephant gun and fires, blowing the gun from Ralston's hand. He
collapses to his knees. Jody moves to Geena. Peter cuffs
Ralston."
Peter: "You really are my protector tonight."
Kermit: "Oh, yeah."
The next scene is Caine getting his reading from Kawena.
At the house where Amanda is being held, Simms knocks on the door
and
explains to Sheen that she had a flat tire and that she needs to
call
AAA. Meanwhile T.J. and fellow cops burst in on the house and
disarm
the men inside. Wong isn't there. Sheen reacts, but Simms takes
him
out. Todd and Amanda embrace. When Todd sees Simms he apologizes.
She
says, "You're alive. That's all I care about." He
embraces her. Chin
and T.J. comment about how Wong wasn't there. They cut to a shot
of him
slipping into the shadows
outside the house unseen.
Next, Peter enters the Ancient's apartment ready to help Caine.
At the beginning of the scene in the room with the caldron, Peter
"stares mesmerized, frightened."
Peter: (softly) "All fired up and ready."
Ancient: "Do not make this decision to save your father. You
must make
it for yourself."
Peter: "I already have. But you could save him, Lo Si."
And they go on from there. The flashback images also include
clips from
Destiny.
The script ends the scene with Peter getting the brands, not
their
dialog afterwards.
Meanwhile, Skalany is in the apothecary with Caine, commenting on
the
state of the room. "What happened here?"
Caine: "I no longer needed these things."
Skalany: "You smashed them?"
This is when Caine grabs her. When he says there's passion
between
them, she replies, "I know. I feel it too. But not like
this. Not by
force."
The scene goes on from there.
There's much more in that scene in the commissioner's office when
Peter
turns in his badge.
Kincaid: "You took one hell of a risk, Captain!"
Simms: (a small smile) "Seemed like a good idea at the
time."
Kincaid: "I'm sure it was. Your son and his girlfriend are
safe. But
next time..."
He breaks off as the door opens and Peter enters. He looks at
Simms,
surprised to see her there, then puts his badge and gun on
Kincaid's
desk.
Peter: "I know my Captain wouldn't have accepted my
resignation. But
you will, Commissioner."
Simms: "What's happened?"
Kincaid: "Look, Detective Caine, I owe you an apology. You
were right
about Ralston. I was wrong."
Peter: "That's not what this is about, Commissioner. It's
about a code
of ethics. I have my own. And they don't work for a cop."
When Caine is holding the photo of Laura, Cheryl asks, "Were
you in
Paris together?"
Caine: "No..."
After Caine says, "Until my son was ready," he says,
"Goodbye, old
friend."
The Ancient rises and embraces him.
Ancient: "We will be together again."
Caine: "We will."
Cheryl: (hugging him) "Gonna miss you."
Caine: "You will not. For you will carry me in your
heart."
The goodbye scene is almost exactly like the episode, again save
for
additional minor lines. And also without the speech by Peter. As
he
walks away and the chaos resumes, it's not a kidnapping they're
responding to. They're just doing their usual routine.
When Caine tells Peter why he's leaving, Peter says, "All
right, I'm
coming with you. Nothing to stop me now."
Caine: "I must do this alone. When I have discovered the
truth, I will
return. In the meantime...will you take these quarters over? Look
after them for me?"
When Peter asks Caine if he knew this day would come, he adds,
"Does
this mean I'm taking over your life?"
Caine: "It does not. It means you are living yours."
This is when Peter asks him if he will come back.
And it ends just like the episode.
