| Script differences | |
| The original (white)
script for this episode was originally set in Kuwait.
Rather than Peter and Caine going after Kermit, it is
Peter and Caine who are caught - along with Kimberly
Sinclair. Pop and Pete are in Kuwait journeying to stand
among the ruins of Troy in Greece. |
Monica Sztybel |
| The tease of this script
starts off with Kermit reading a postcard from Peter. He
exclaims that it's the fourth one he's gotten. "Only
Peter Caine would want to tour the oil fields of Kuwait
on his vacation." Kermit explains to Strenlich and Jody why Peter and Caine are there. "Homer! The Iliad! The ruins of Troy! Schlieman found Troy, four cities down below the Roman town of Ilium. Homer describes the wind blowing ceaselessly through the long grasses and the tiny stunted oak trees. Caine wants to stand among those ruins." Strenlich: "And they're driving through Kuwait to get there?" Kermit: "Gulf War's over." Jody: "Does Saddam Hussein know that?" |

| Peter is driving them
through the desert. He complains that it's hot and how
they could be fishing instead. Caine reminds him of their
last fishing trip. Peter goes on to say how long it'll
take them to get to their destination, when Caine tells
him to turn off. And, as in the episode, they come across
Kimberly Sinclair changing her tire. She blames the blowout on her losing control of her car (a volvo) when the sand obscured her view. When the men show up from the prison camp, they end the tease there. |
Monica Sztybel |
| The characters in the
prison camp are the same as in the episode, but some of
the names are different. Mackensie is there. A man named
Crenna is saying Kermit's lines. |
Monica Sztybel |
| When Caine, Peter and
Kimberly get off the truck, Peter spots Crenna and
recognizes him from a photo Kermit carries. He keeps
talking. Without warning he is hit on the side of the
head with a rifle butt. This is when Caine and Peter
start fighting. It ends the same as in the episode. |
Monica Sztybel |
| In the barracks, Peter
also has to change clothes. |
Monica Sztybel |
| When Kimberly says her
speech about getting the Secretary of State there in 48
hours, Peter tells her that it won't work. He describes
how he noticed that most of the prisoners were Americans.
"I looked into some of the faces of the prisoners.
Or maybe I just felt their pain. The acceptance of their
fate. They've been here for a long time." When Peter tells her there's no prison that can hold Caine, she asks sardonically, "Is that right? He's Superman?" Peter: "He's a Shambhala Master and you don't have to understand what that means except that for him fences and barbed wire don't exist." |
Monica Sztybel |
| Hammadi (Straker) tells
Caine that the prisoners are political ones. That the
Bagdad prisons are overflowing and that this compound is
an internment camp. Hammadi tells Caine that he, and Peter entered the country illegally, and that's why they were brought there. When Caine tells him that thewoman was in "distress", Hammadi replies, "Who also entered without a visa. Whom your son professes not to know, yet there is an obvious relationship between them." (with irony) "He makes friends so quickly?" Caine: (without irony) "It is one of his better qualities." Hammadi is a bit surprised that Caine has no identification. He asks why he shouldn't believe Caine is a spy. Caine replies with, "Because in your heart ou know that is not the truth." |
Monica Sztybel |
| The chat with the
Markers is with Caine and Peter, as well as Kimberly. Tom
works for the British Consulate in Dhahran. He is wearing
his tennis whites. |
Monica Sztybel |
| When Gregg and Peter
have it out, and Peter says, "I don't like being
shoved," Gregg comes back with "Spoil your
hair?" After they lock Gregg in solitary, Peter turns to Crenna (who has most of Kermit's lines in this) and says softly, "You know a man named Kermit? Kermit Griffin? Thought I saw you in a photograph he carries." Crenna: (also soft) "And where would you have seen that?" Peter: "Police precinct in the states. I'm a cop. So's Kermit. He used to be a mercenary. Like you?" Crenna: "I'm a wildcatter. Cap burning oil wells. Got picked up in a Bahrah brothel one night in Kuwait too drunk to know what was happening. Only Kermit I know is a frog on Sesame Street (as he moves away) "Unless he wears green glasses at all times." |
Monica Sztybel |
| In the barracks, as
Peter talks to Caine about escaping he says, "I was
thinking of the odds we've faced. Fighting the Dark
Warrior in Shambhala. The marauders that we formed a
Dragonswing against. Shadow Assassins. Warlords. The Sing
Wah. Why do I feel this time the odds against us are too
high?" Caine: "Because we are isolated. Away from all that is familiar. Rescue is an illusion. We have only ourselves to rely upon." This is when Peter tells Caine he can go get help using his Shambhala skills. |
Monica Sztybel |
| A dinner siren is heard.
Caine departs, saying that he does not need to eat. Up until now Kimberly has been lying about why she was on that road. She had told people she was on vacation. Peter confronts her about thetruth just before Hammadi's men bust into the barrack and take her to him. Interestingly enough, a line she says to Hammadi is similar to the line Marilyn Blake said in Initiation. "Touch me and I'll claw your eyesout." |
Monica Sztybel |
| When they are preparing
to go to the meeting, Crenna is much more severe about
his ideas of escape than Kermit was. He thinks they
should storm the gates. Caine says many would die. Crenna
says that the survivors could walk out. Peter says,
"And how far would they go before Saddam Hussein's
army swooped down with tanks and armored cars and picked
them up?" Crenna: "A few minutes of freedom is all I ask." This is when Caine disappears once again. |
Monica Sztybel |
| While Mac is lecturing
about the tunnels, Hammadi's men bust in, but not before
he covers the diagram with maps of Kuwait. One of the
men, Aziz, tells Mac that they know the prisoners are
digging the tunnels. Mack denies it, but adds that they
will be rescued and that Hammadi and his men will hang.
This prompts Aziz to hit Mac. Crenna steps in and he's
ordered to go to solitary. It's Crenna that announced
that Caine is already there (he must have seen Caine
being taken there). |
Monica Sztybel |
| When Peter is struck in
the compound after his outburst about locking Caine up
like an animal. Crenna and Mac come to his aid. Kimberly
does remind Peter about what he said about his father and
prisons. Crenna: (sotto) "Keep your dignity." Mac: "Don't let them see your pain. That's what they want." Peter: (gasping) "You can't treat prisoners like this. There's the Geneva convention." Crenna: "The Raqs burned that along with the American flag." |
Monica Sztybel |
| The scene where Hammadi
muses about Caine is done in his office. No Kermit, no
Crenna. When he asks out loud how Caine can do it, Peter
suddenly appears and says, "He's my father."
Apparently Hammadi was waiting for him. Peter's reasoning
for a morale boosting celebration is that Hammadi had
promised them they could celebrate Memorial Day. At the celebration... Caine steadies himself against a table. Peter: "Pop... Caine: "I am all right. But my strength is greatly depleted. As is yours. None of these prisoners will endure the strain of this incarceration much longer." |
Monica Sztybel |
| After the tunnel is
discovered, Hammadi orders Caine into his office, while
Gregg and Marker are put in the cooler. He tells Caine
that they will be moving to another prison - three of
them. "You and your son will be separated..." After this, Caine shows up in the Kramer tunnel as in the episode. Rather than break into a truck, Crenna has the explosive in his bunk. He says he's been stealing it piece by piece. |
Monica Sztybel |
| Before they make their
moves, Caine and Peter srand outside the barracks
talking. Caine: "You know what you must do." Peter: "Where will you be, father." Caine: (a small smile) "In that moment you sounded just like you did at times in the temple." Peter: "There were times in the temple when I got real scared. Like now." (cradling his father's face) "See you outside those gates?" Caine: "Yes." |
Monica Sztybel |
| Peter leads the
distraction by fighting with Hassan (who is the same man
he had conflict in as in the episode, but with a
different name). The others move past during this. Peter
takes out Hassan as the explosions start. |
Monica Sztybel |
| Crenna is shot and dies
in Caine's arms. He hands Caine something to give to
Kermit. |
Monica Sztybel |
| The prisoners happen
upon two trucks along a dirt road as they escape from the
camp. Kermit jumps down from one, dressed in black.
Strenlich jumps down from the other. They had gotten
worried when they didn't hear from Peter. Then Caine
supposedly sent a message to Kermit to wait outside the
compound on that very night. |
Monica Sztybel |
| In the tag the group is
in a cafe. Caine hands Kermit the item Crenna gave him.
It is a battered cigarette case. Caine: "Your friend gave me this. To give to you." Kermit: "We fought in hellholes all over the Third World. The three of us. Crenna, Blaisdell and myself." (pocketing the case) "Thanks." There is no dialog about whether Gregg is Kermit's son or not. The scene ends with Peter and Caine climbing into the jeep. Peter: "Where's Kermit?" Caine: "He says goodbye." Peter: "You think the ruins of Troy are still there?" Caine: "For two thousand years." Peter: "Let's go visit." Caine smiles. Peter drives off. Caine puts his arm around his son's shoulders. Camera pans them down the Kuwait street as we fade out. |
Monica Sztybel |
| I also have a yellow
version of the script that is more like the episode.
Interestingly enough, when Peter has his outburst about
the cooler, no one hits him. Instead, Kermit restrains
him, while Kimberly says her speech about holding on to
hope. When Peter senses Caine's signal to move to the tunnel, Peter says, "Okay! That's his signal!" Mac: "I didn't see anything." Peter: (softly) "But I felt it..." |
