The Chinese characters on the big wooden doors to the temple when they enter -- it says "Shaolin" ! Literally, "young (or small)" "woods." Without needing too much imagination, you can see the "Lin" character looks sort of like two trees.

Marshall, the evil Shaolin monk is Wiseman in the script.

Master Kwan was played by Robert Ito. Best known for Quincy, though I will always remember him as Dr. Hikita in Buckaroo Banzai. "It's your hand, Buckaroo." :-)

The scene where Caine has a flashback to KCC1 reading the scroll is inaccurate. The scroll in that episode of TOS was not about a death stone. It was a fable.

At the end of the episode, Peter, Caine and Lo Si are walking away from the temple, carrying their bags. Peter is wearing black gloves. He reaches into his coat pocket with his left hand and pulls a book of matches out; then he asks his Father, "Do you remember this?" When he pulls the matches from his pocket, he is not wearing the gloves any more.

Script differences:
The tease is different. Instead of Peter meditating alone, he's doing it with Caine at Caine's place. Toward the end of the meditation, Peter says, "I'm losing it! I can't do it!" At that point he falls into darkness after banging on the doors. Peter's "eyes snap open as if jolted from a dream. His face is covered in sweat from the effort."

Caine is still under meditation.

Caine: (to himself) "No! I am powerless... Peter, there is danger."
Peter reaches out to Caine, placing a hand on his shoulder.
Peter: "Pop? Snap out of it."
Caine is still in distress. Peter shakes him vigorously. Then, with an explosive move, from the lotus position, Caine throws Peter across the room.

Peter "lies on the floor in a heap. He shakes off the blow and looks up to see Caine standing over him, a hand held out to help him up."

Peter: (as Caine helps him to his feet) "What the hell was _that_?"
Caine: "And intense force, perhaps a powerful enemy. I do not know."
Peter: "What do you mean, you don't know? Now we're fighting bad guys in our minds?"
Caine: "Our minds are the source of all good and evil. What we experience in meditation is the manefestation of our hopes and fears."
Peter: "Glowing green lights and slamming doors? It was like a bad dream." (wry) "I should know. I have a million of them."
Caine: "Meditation can help us control our fears. Our emotions. To help us see our path more clearly."
Peter grabs his jacket and moves to the doorway.
Peter: Kung Fu moves, kicks, punches, I can handle. But this metaphysical stuff, it's a brick wall to me. Thanks, Pop, but no thanks. I didn't come here to have nightmares."
Caine: "Then why did you come here?"

This is when Peter goes into his losing it speech. After he says, "I don't even know who I am anymore," he says, "I guess I thought you'd have the answer."

Caine: "Because I am..."
Peter: "A Shambhala master? Yeah."
Caine: "To gain control of one's life, one must commit oneself to training the mind and body. Not a simple task for an afternoon visit."
Peter: (disillusioned; then softer) "Maybe I just need to start again."

Here is where Peter says he's been thinking about it for weeks. He doesn't have to repeat his request ("yes or no") to Caine in the script. He agrees right away.
Monica Sztybel
After Caine agrees, Peter leaves. The room turns dark. "A strange wind swirls around Caine. Then a glowing green light shines on Caine's face. He has a quick subliminal flash...Caine in a limbo space, doubled over in agony, green energy arcing through his body, screaming in pain."
Monica Sztybel
Act one has Caine and Lo Si sparring while Peter and Cheryl walk in an watch. Caine tells Cheryl Hines to "See to my duties in Chinatown during my absence." Since when is she as skilled as he is?

Cheryl: "No problem. Any idea when you'll be back?"
Caine shrugs. The Ancient moves up to them.
Ancient: "That depends on Peter."

Peter asks Lo Si if he had any doubts when he chose to become a priest. The Ancient tells him a story about how he became one (similar speech as in Warlord), but doesn't say if he had any doubts. He asks Peter, "You are not certain of your decision?"

Peter: "I feel confused. Incomplete. Like something's missing. You know what I mean?"
Caine: "Many search for a lifetime, but do not find fulfillment. When one finally realizes one's destiny, harmony will result."
Ancient: (to Caine) "Of course his training must be completed at a Shaolin Temple."
Caine: "Yes. Zhang Zhou province will be very cold this time of year."
Peter: "What? _China_? You've got to be kidding. Come on, Pop, we didn't mkae a lot of friends last time we were over there."
Caine: "Since my temple in California was destroyed years ago, it is the only one of it's kind."
Ancient: "My old friend, there is another temple. I have found it."
Peter: "Where?"
Ancient: "In the North. Hidden from the world." (a slight smile)
"Colder than Zhang Zhou."
Caine: (to Peter) "It is good that your friends at the precinct support your decision."
Peter: (wryly) "Actually, I haven't _exactly_ told them yet."
Monica Sztybel
Cut to the precinct....

Strenlich: "You're going to _what_?"

Peter is placing his belongings into a cardboard box. Strenlich is in shock. The others are at their desks listening.

Peter: "You heard me. I didn't complain when you decided to spen a week in the forest with your men's awareness group?"
Strenlich: "I was trying to find my inner self."
Blake: "Was it a long search?"
Strenlich: "I heard that." (shakes it off) "Peter, crime is running rampant out there, you have a caseload backed to Timbuktu. There is _no way_ Simms is going to allow this to happen..."
Simms Voice: "It's a done deal, Chief."
Camera turns to reveal Simms standing in the doorway of her office.
Simms: "Detective Caine will be taking an extended leave-of-absence.:
Strenlich: "How come I wasn't consulted on this?"
Simms: "Because it was either let him go or accept his letter of resignation." (to Peter) "Right, Detective?"
The precinct falls silent.
Peter: (to Simms) "I owe you one, Captain."
Simms: "Believe me, I will collect on this."
She turns and moves back into her office, closing the door behind her.
Strenlich: (looking around) "Alright, back to work, people! This isn't Shakespeare in the park."
The precinct cops turn back to their work.
Strenlich: (to Peter) "You're serious about this. You're gonna become a priest."
Peter: "I want to finish my training. Hopefully that'll give me some idea of who the hell I really am. What I want to do with the rest of my life."
Strenlich: "Fine. But as far as I'm concerned, you'll always be a cop. and a damned good one." (extending his hand) "Good luck, Peter."
Strenlich moves off. Skalany, Broderick and Blake move up to him.
Skalany: "You sure about this, partner?"
Peter: "About as sure as I'll ever be. Watch your back."
Skalany: (hugging Peter) "We'll miss you."
Broderick: "Won't be the same without you, Pete."
Peter: (to Broderick) "Hold down the fort, Sarge." (handing Blake his badge and gun) "Here, Blake. Take care of these for me."
Blake: "I'll keep them warm for when you get back." (wry) "If you come back."
They move off. Peter picks up the box containing his belongings. Jody is there, looking at him.
Jody: "Just like that, huh?"
Peter: "Don't give me that look, Jody. That's not fair."
Jody: "It's just that we've been through a lot and..."
Peter: "I need to do this, partner."
Jody: "I know." (she moves closer to him) "Just don't forget about your friends."
Then Jody plants a long, searing kiss on Peter. Then they break and Jody moves off. Peter stares after her, then slowly walks out of the precinct.

It is here that Caine and the Ancient discuss whether Caine is able to teach his son. The Ancient's speech is longer,"You know him better than anyone. You taught him as a boy. You are his father."

Caine: "Yes. I must remain impartial as his teacher." (then softly) "Old friend, do not move."

This is when they're attacked by the men in black outfits. Instead of the Ancient saying "Bloody marvelous", he says "nice catch". Kim Chan liked to slip in "Bloody marvelous" whenever he could:-)
Monica Sztybel
The script does not have the scene of Caine, Peter and the Ancient walking in the street to the temple. Insted that scene starts with Peter commenting on the familiar smells.
Monica Sztybel
When Master Kwan tells Peter he needs to prove himself worthy, he says wryly, "Couldn't be tougher than the Lieutenant's exam. I'm ready when you are." Kwan tells him they will test him at sunrise, rather than later that evening.
Monica Sztybel
When the group of priests leave, Peter doesn't question why Kwan didn't remember Caine. Instead he says, "Well, I'm not worried. I mean, I've kept up my skills. I've gotta be at least half way there. Right, Pop?" This is when Caine tells him that he must begin anew.

After Caine hits him, Peter says (in pain), "I'm...obviously not _that_good." This is when Caine tells him not to question his authority.
Monica Sztybel
The next scene is with Caine and Kwan walking through the temple, talking about Kwan's path and how it led him to start a temple of his own.
Kwan: "A wealthy Tibetan antiquities trader funded the building of this temple. To keep the old ways alive. Our benefactor has since died, but his son studies with us today." I suspect this is Marshall/Wiseman. Kwan turns to Caine. "I would welcome you to remain here with us, Kwai Chang Caine. We could teach the way of Shaolin together as we did once before."

Caine: "I am here for my son."
Caine and Master Kwan have arrived at the temple courtyard, where we can see Peter and the Ancient in the background preparing for the 'test' of Peter's worthiness.
Kwan: "Yes. Peter. You understand that I have allowed him here only because he is a Caine. He may be too old and set in his ways to become a Shaolin master."
Caine: "'It is never too late to start on the road to enlightenment.' Your words, twenty-five years ago. when I first came to the temple."
Kwan: (a smile) "You always did have an excellent memory, Kwai Chang Caine." (after a beat) "I have found mine to be less reliable of late."
Caine: "I was surprised you did not recognize me."
Kwan: "I am an old monk now."
Caine sees a quick flash of the death stone glowing green.
Caine: (soft, to himself) "That is not the reason you did not remember."
Kwan: (watching the scene, to Caine) "He will be tested to the limits of his strength and will, old friend. Only then will we know his true intent. Only then will he know his true destiny."
Monica Sztybel
They go to Peter who does his "rookie at a stakeout" and "walk in the park" speeches (did you notice how many times Peter says rookie in the episode?). Just before he must face the group, he spies two monks and asks the Ancient, "So which guy am I fighting?"

The Ancient raises an eyebrow and grins as he moves away.
Peter: "You gotta be kidding!"

Then Kwan goes into his speech, followed by Peter saying, "Wish me luck, Pop." Caine bows instead of winks.
Monica Sztybel
During the fight, when Peter says, "You must be the teacher's pet," Marshall/Wiseman says, "You could say that."
Monica Sztybel
When Marshall uses the crystal, Caine cries out, "No! Peter."
Monica Sztybel
After Kwan welcomes Peter, Wiseman says to him, "Nice moves back there. Not bad for a novice."

Peter: "Thanks. I got lucky. I was barely holding my own."
Wiseman: "Maybe after you spend a little time here, you'll be in my class. You have real potential." (puting a hand on Peter's shoulder) "You could go far with talent like that. We should talk."
Peter: "I don't think so."
Wiseman's expression darkens.
Wiseman: "Sleep on it, Detective."

He moves off. Caine approaches Peter.
Caine: "You fought well."
Peter: "Did I fight well, or did you fill me up with some crazy Shambhala mystic energy that helped me win? No, don't answer that. I don't even want to know."
Caine: "Your opponent was... more than he appeared to be. A negative force surrounds his chi."
Peter: "Forget it, Pop. He was good. Way better than me. I don't want you to fight my battles for me. That's why I'm here. Just _train_ me. Got it?"
Caine: "Very well."
Monica Sztybel
The next scene show Caine and the Ancient wearing "robes bearing the symbols of the temple. Peter is "stripped to the waist, wearing only the simple pants of a student. He is anxious to begin. Caine regards Peter."

Caine: "I see you are ready to begin."
Peter: "I want this, Pop. I want to learn it all."
Ancient: (to Caine) "He speaks as you did, when you first entered the temple. Impatient. Hungry for knowledge."
Peter: "I just don't want to be tossed around like a rag doll by guys like Wiseman anymore. Come on, Pop. Teach me."
Caine: "You wish to learn how to fight. As did your great-grandfather at your age."
Peter: "I guess it's in the genes."
Caine: "Then let us waste no more time."
Peter: "Great. Where do we start?"
Caine: "With breathing."
Peter: (incredulous) "What? _Breathng_? (catching himself, off Caine's look) "I know, I know. Don't question your authority. Breathing it is."
Caine: "Remember. Without breath, there can be nothing. It is the strongest link to our chi. It is the link to who you truly _are_..."
Monica Sztybel
The montage begins here, and is a little different. Peter learns the art of Chi Gung. "Breathing combined form, stance, balance, and meditation. Basic Shaolin training. At first Peter seems awkward and clumsy. But he doesn't give up. We see Caine and the Ancient helping Peter with his exercises. Correcting his positions, encouraging him. He struggles on."

Caine: "The art of Shaolin Kung Fu is founded upon form, balance, meditation. This is the base upon which all else rests..."
Peter: "Is the kind of stuff your grandfather used to do?"
Caine: (pulling out the journal) "Here is his journal. See for yourself."
Peter takes the journal and opens it. Camera tightens to Peter's face as he reads.

They go to a flashback of KCC1 and Master Po during the scene where animal forms are demonstrated.

Back in the present, Peter is walking along a thin beam of wood, eyes closed. Caine and the Ancient watch. Caine says, "Focus, Peter. Focus."

Peter "stumbles and falls from the beam. Caine moves over to Peter. A look between them as Cane helps Peter up."

This is when Peter feels like it's hopeless. Instead of rice paper it's the beam.
Monica Sztybel
After Peter leaves the room to meditate, the dialog between Caine and the Ancient is different.

Ancient: "His anger is great."
It is as if Caine has not heard him. The Ancient moves closer and touches Caine on the shoulder. Caine is startled for a moment.
Ancient: "Kwai Chang Caine, are you well?"
Caine: "My apologies, old friend, what did you say?"
Ancient: "Peter's anger prevents him from acheiving his potential."
Caine: "Yes. There remains a rift between us. Anger from when each thought the other to be dead. Fear of losing each other again. Old wounds that may never heal."
Ancient: "They will heal, old friend. The process will not be easy. But there is something _else_ that troubles you. Something in this temple."
Caine: (wryly) "Do you not ever become tired of being right?"
Ancient: (also wry) "Never."

This is when Caine says he feels a negative force in the temple. He decides they should meditate, not the Ancient.
Monica Sztybel
When Peter complains to Caine about interfering, he says "college freshmen" rather than "rookies".
Monica Sztybel
Caine is the one who points out that the weapons would not be used in practical jokes. Peter does not slice it on his hand, but he does examine the sword and believes Caine. When Caine tells him there is something not right in the temple, Peter says wryly, "Maybe there's more going on at this temple than just kung fu and meditation."
Monica Sztybel
The next scene is Peter training. This time it's "pain threshold techniques. Handling glowing hot chains. Walking over white hot sand." Then they do the bucket scene. Since they don't do the rice paper bit in the script, it is here that Peter searches for Caine for approval and finds him gone.
Monica Sztybel
According to the script, the scroll says something other than what Caine says in the episode and what it origially said in TOS.

Caine: "...Master Po dictated this scroll to his students, telling them of his techniques for the training of young Shaolin. His ways were said to be lost forever."
Monica Sztybel
The visit to Po is not described in detail. The script just says, "scenes still to be determined".
Monica Sztybel
After Caine tells Peter he must rest, he helps his son to his feet and takes him to his room.

Peter: (groggy) "Tell the maid not to wake me."
Caine: "I will waken you in due time."
Monica Sztybel
Peter has a nightmare, seeing images of Master Po training students, Wiseman's evil laugh, then the crystal and the doors closing on him. "Wiseman's figure steps in front of Peter, surrounded by green light."

Wiseman: "Care for a rematch? Winner take all. For the life of the great and powerful Kwai Chang Caine..."

He laughs malevolently.

As Peter prepares for the test (the run in the woods), Wiseman asks, "Sleep well, Detective?"

Peter: "Like a baby."
Wiseman: (a knowing laugh) "I feel great. Nice day for a run in the woods, isn't it?"
Peter: "Couldn't think of anything I'd rather be doing. Look, do you mind? I'm trying to get focused here."
A gong sounds.
Wiseman: "Time's up."
Monica Sztybel
When Caine and the Ancient approach the room where the crystal is, Caine loses his balance and the Ancient supports him. This is before they enter. Caine insists they must continue. Just as he says that, the door magically swings open. They go inside and the door closes behind them.
Monica Sztybel
Meanwhile, when Peter finds himself unsure as to where to go (this is at the point where Peter used the "hand of a thousand bells" in the episode), he says, "Why do I get the feeling I'm not in Kansas anymore?"

Wiseman's laughter echos as three enemies approach Peter with fighting staffs.
Wiseman's voice: "You father's power is mine, detective."

Peter takes out the men, he finds his way and continues on.
Monica Sztybel
When Caine tells the Ancient to conserve his strength, Wiseman says, "Wise words. Make yourself comfortable old men. With your collective powers moving through me, I will quickly take care of the detective once and for all."

When Caine prepares himself for meditation, he has a flashback to KCC1's fight, which is similar to Peter's fight against Wiseman.
Monica Sztybel
Peter is fighting a losing battle until he gets a psychic flash of his father and Lo Si in trouble. In one move, he tears the crystal off Wiseman's neck. According to the script that's what weakens it. Peter doesn't shatter it.
Monica Sztybel
After Peter breaks the crystal and they defeat the Sing Wah, he embraces Caine.
Monica Sztybel
In the tag, when Caine says that nothing Peter does has ever disappointed him, Peter says, "You're being facetious." (to the Ancient) "He is, isn't he?"
Monica Sztybel
There is no matchbook moment. That scene ends with Caine saying, "You may still be a cop, but in your heart, you are truly Shaolin." Caine doesn't add that he learned it from this journey.
Monica Sztybel
They go to the precinct. Peter walks in, carrying the box. Everyone is watching as he goes to his desk. Blake puts Peter's gun and badge on his desk.

Blake: "Welcome back, Peter. You might need these."
Peter: "Thanks, Blake."
Then Simms opens the door to her office and leans out.
Simms: "Double homicide on at Fourth and Lexington." (to Peter) "Well, don't just stand there, Detective. Get right on it."
Peter: (a smile) "You got it, Captain." (to Skalany) "Ready, partner?"
Skalany: "As Kermit would say: "Oh Yeah..."
They move out of the squadroom as we cut to...

Caine on his balcony, hearing a siren on the street. He smiles.
