| Patrick Collington who
played Matthew Caine's commanding officer inthe flashback
also shows up as the Mayor in Dragonswing, and he also
appears in Special Forces as a commanding officer. |

| Script differences | |
| I think I
have the blue version. I can't say the script is *very*
different from the episode, but there are a lot of
differences. For example, they don't reveal that Nathalie
is Bennett's daughter until the end, but they do drop
hints. Theres a scene where Caine confronts Simon after
he arrives at the church, dropping cryptic comments
alluding to his suspicions of Simon's intent. They also
don't reveal that Simon is the son of the Nazi until he
morphs while holding the chalice. |
Monica Sztybel |
| The tease in the script
has more dialog between Peter and Kelly. It's almost
exactly like the phone conversation he has with her in
Brotherhood of the Bell, when he cancels out on her
because of paperwork. Then the lights go out and Kelly
has either hung up or the phone is dead. |
Monica Sztybel |
| The fight is done
without the funny quips about being on the neighborhood
watch program. |
Monica Sztybel |
| In the first flashback
Caine has about his father, the wounded soldier is dying.
The CO of the unit, Hawkins, is gentler in the script.
While he orders Matthew and Bennett to look for shelter,
he also is very explanatory about why they need to
evacuate. Bennett thought the Germans were retreating,
Hawkins replies, "They are, son. They just don't
want to make it easy on us." |
Monica Sztybel |
| The flashback also has
Matthew and Bennett dodging a German Jeep. Bennett turns
and finds Matthew gone only to see him standing on the
church grounds. |
Monica Sztybel |
| As Caine explains the
history of the Chalice to Peter he says about Matthew,
"...He was obsessed with all the mysteries of
ancient times." Peter: (softly) "And that's what killed him in the end." Caine: "Yes." |

| At the precinct,
Strenlich is barking orders from behind the desk, not
Blake, but Blake is there with him. Parts of it mirror
"Plague". Strenlich: "How does Broderick find anything back here? His filing system is medieval." Blake: "It's his system. He knows how it works." Strenlich: "I didn't go to _my_ brother's wedding. Why should he?" Blake: "He's a family man, Chief." Strenlich: (an edge) "And I'm not? By the way, where the hell is Peter?" Blake: "Hasn't reported in yet, Chief." Strenlich: "Great. How am I supposed to run a precinct with two cops out of the picture?" Instead of Jody being sarcastic with the guy at the desk, it's Strenlich, but Jody is passing by and has her gun grabbed anyway. Peter's entrance distracts the gunman, but only by opening the door...no lines. Once the guy is in custody, Peter says, "What the hell's going on here? I can't leave the precinct for five minutes without some psycho holding the place hostage?" When he asks if Jody is okay, rather than she say it shouldn't have happened, she says, "Yeah. It happens, right? goes with the territory." |
Monica Sztybel |
| Peter is a bit distant
with Bennett. When the man mentions the "plague
crisis" and Caine and Peter on the news, Peter says,
"So my family gets good PR. What's so urgent that
you would disarm a creep holding a loaded .45 with a
walking stick?" Bennett tells Peter it's about the
Chalice. Peter turns to Jody who is standing nearby and
says, "Jody, would you..." Jody: "I know, I know. Cover for you. I owe you this one." |

| Instead of Rickie
getting his breathing regulated, it's an 8 year old girl
named Nancy and her mom Judy. She has asthma. She won't
drink it, but he makes her do it by making it smell and
taste like a chocolate milkshake. When they leave, Peter
says, "Chocolate milkshake, Pop? How come you didn't
try that with me back at the temple?" Caine: "You were too stubborn even for that." |
Monica Sztybel |
| Instead of Bennett
already knowing what happened before he and Peter arrive
at Caine's, they discuss it there. When they decide to go
to France, Peter says, "Wait a minute. We can't just
pick up and go chasing off to France after some legendary
chalice. Can we?" (off Caine and Gary's looks)
"Well, I'm coming too. Why ruin my reputation with
Simms now?" |
Monica Sztybel |
| Caine and Bennett go
into the church and Peter goes after Nathalie. There's no
"American charm" in this. He shows genuine
concern over her bad mood, and she suspects him as a
fortune hunter looking for the Chalice. When he tells her
he's a cop, she relaxes. |
Monica Sztybel |
| Caine suggests moving
the Chalice from the church. Bennett tells him that
Matthew said that the chalice is too powerful to be
trifled with. Caine says that's the reason it should be
moved. |
Monica Sztybel |
| The dialog between
Nathalie and Peter about his relationship with his father
is different. Nathalie says that after her mother died
she was put in an orphanage. Father Vachon is like an
uncle to her. He told her never to give up hope. Peter: "Sounds like my father. Never stop believing in your hopes will someday be fulfilled. A tough pill to swallow when you're fifteen and alone." Nathalie: "Are you speaking from experience, Monsieur?" Peter: "When I was fourteen, I thought I lost him. I spent years thinking he was dead." Nathalie: "But the man you were with? He is your father?" Peter: "I never gave up hope." |
Monica Sztybel |
| After the incident with
the falling piece of stone, Peter tells Nathalie he
doesn't think it's an accident. She invites him to the
church later that night, telling him she has a plan. |
Monica Sztybel |
| Meanwhile Caine and
Bennett are in an Inn discussing Matthew. Gary: "When did you last see your father?" Caine: "When I was fourteen. He heard the cross of Catenada had been sighted in the Anpurna plateau of the Himalayas. He went to lead the expedition to find it and...never returned. Gary: "Must have been hard. Losing your father at such a young age." Caine: (softly) "I was the same age Peter was when we were separated at the temple." Vachon: "Strange how life treats the righteous, isn't it?" (he just entered the foyer) |
Monica Sztybel |
| Nathalie is in the
church during the service, and Peter was supposed to be
too. But when it is over and she turns to comment, he is
gone. On the scaffolding, we see Peter's attacker is Bertrand (Simon's right hand man, who kidnaps Nathalie in the episode). They fight for a while before Peter falls over the edge. He hangs on the edge, and the attacker, Bertrand says, "You should never have interfered. Au revoir, Monsieur." And he kicks Peter's hand off. Peter: "No!" "...with a yell he falls into the night." |
Monica Sztybel |
| There is a conversation
between Nathalie and Bennett in the church later on
(she's not kidnapped yet, apparently). She hands him the
keys to the church, telling him the locks had been
changed to deter Simon and his men. Bennett asks her if
she trusts him with them, and she says something tells
her to. He asks about her mother. Taken aback, she asks
him how he knows, but they're interrupted by Simon who is
determined to get back to work. Neither she nor Bennett
let on that the locks have been changed. Nathalie walks
off. Bennett says to Simon, "What's the French word for 'locksmith'?" Infuriated, Simon orders for a crowbar and asks where Caine is. |
Monica Sztybel |
| This is when Nathalie is
kidnapped. Peter comes to...in a pushcart filled with
hay. He sees her being taken off in a car. He gets up and
staggers to his rental. |
Monica Sztybel |
| Bennett tries to stop
the men from going inside the church, but they frisk him
and find the keys. They unlock the door and go inside. |
Monica Sztybel |
| Nathalie has been taken
to the a Village Inn to a room with a collection of
artifacts. She calls Bertrand a graverobber. He laughs
and says that they bring no pleasure to the dead. The scenes in between this one and the following are with Caine going toretrieve the chalice. Similar to the episode. |
Monica Sztybel |
| Peter arrives at the Inn
and walks down the corridor with his gun drawn. He rounds
a corner and sees a guard. He quickly ducks out of sight.
He says quietly, "Great. Now what?" He goes
into a flashback at the temple. Caine is teaching the young monks a lesson. Dennis is there. Caine: "The five senses of the body are sight, smell, touch, taste and hearing. Of these senses, which is the most dominant? Dennis: "Sight. What we see." Caine: "Correct. It is also the sense we use most often when we fight. However, with training, we can learn to fool our opponent's strongest sense." Peter: "How?" Caine: "There are many methods." There is a sudden loud crash of a gong out of shot. The students all turn toward the sound. When they turn back, Caine is gone. Dennis: "Where is he?" Peter: "Father?" Caine's voice: "Up here." The students, in awe, look up to a balcony where Caine is standing. Caine: "As I said..." (with a smile) "...there are many methods." Back in the present Peter looks up and sees a circular smoke detector on the ceiling. Next thing we see is the guard being distracted as the "wailing" smoke detector rolls by. He follows the detector with his eyes. When he turns back, Peter takes him out. The door flies open and Peter takes out the second guard as well. Bertrand is knocked back as well. "A few more fancy moves and they're all French toast." Peter unties Nathalie. Nathalie: "What took you so long?" Peter: "Well, you see, first I was knocked unconscious. Then I had this little flashback." Nathalie: "What?" Peter: "I'll explain later. Come on." |
Monica Sztybel |
| Rather than being pure
of hatred "the soul of the receiver is absolutely
free from personal desire." If he is not "he
will be cast forever into a Bardo world of perpetual pain
and darkness." And the chalice "will be lost
forever." |
Monica Sztybel |
| When Caine clutches the
chalice, rather than beams of light entering his being
(and the symbol of the KFTLC yin/yang), they go to a
miriad of flashbacks to Ciane's most intense physical
moments... "Fighting Sung Gui, the Dark Warrior,
Tan, Peter in the Bardo, etc. The montages escalate in
speed, crescendoing..." Caine falls to his knees,
unable to bear the psychic shocks. Soon it subsides and
he relaxes. |
Monica Sztybel |
| Peter and Nathalie
appear just before Simon morphs into his father.
"Peter and Nathalie take advantage of the guards'
distraction and attack them, taking them out with kung
fu." (how does she know kf?) |
Monica Sztybel |
| Instead of Simon
disappearing right away, Caine grabs hold of the Chalice.
The room trembles. Caine knocks Simon away and he's
grabbed by the spirits of the Crusaders who drag him into
the altar cave, where a stone wall forms as in the
episode. There is no description, however, of whether or
not Caine still has the Chalice. Peter runs to him and
asks him if he's okay. Caine says he's fine. This is when Nathalie turns to Bennett and asks him if he knew her mother. The truth is revealed. Meanwhile Peter asks about the Chalice. Caine says, "Reclaimed by the spirits that protect it." Vachon: "The altar cave has been sealed. Permanently. Thank you, Caine." |
Monica Sztybel |
| The tag is different. DESCRIPTION: "French Villa, corridor.... Peter and Caine follow a uniformed nurse down a hallway in a lovely old villa. They pass several elderly residents along the way...." Peter: "Now why would Father Vachon ask us to come here?" Caine: "You will see." Peter: "Can you at least give me a hint?" Caine: "Patience is a virtue." Peter: "So is knowledge." The nurse stops outside a private room. She turns to them. She smiles. Nurse: "He's been waiting for you all day." Peter: (to Caine) "Who?" Caine: (ignoring Peter) "Thank you." Caine ushers Peter into the room. Camera moves slowly toward the back of an old man seated in a rocking chair, looking out a window. As we reach him, the old man turns to face us It's -- Matthew Caine. The spitting image of our Caine, plus thrity years or so. He smiles gently. Matthew: "Please sit down." Caine beams at his father. Peter is rivited. Caine: "Father." Peter: "You -- you can't mean --" Caine kneels down beside his father. Takes his hand in his own and kisses it. Matthew: "Please..." Caine: "It has been so long." Matthew: "I heard about the destruction of your temple. I was told you were dead." Caine: "I heard you went to the Himalayas in search fo the Cross of Castaneda. That yo died in an avalanche." Peter: (moved) "Where have I seen this scene before?" Caine turns to Peter. Caine: "This is my son, Peter. Your grandson." Peter bows to his grandfather. Peter: "An honor to meet you. I've read your diary. Many times. It's as if I've always known you." Matthew: "Please. Sit. We have much to talk about." Peter sits down with Caine. The conversation continues as the camera pulls away and we fade out. |
